Yadkin Valley Wine Trip    July 2007

Where can you go for a quick weekend trip in North Carolina? How about a wine tasting trip to the Yakin Valley Region. West of Winston Salem and just under 2hrs from Raleigh. There are over 20 vineyards in the area so the most difficult part is choosing which to see. We settled on five for our trip with a nice mix of Mom and Pop shops and large commercial establishments.

We visited Westbend, Laurel Gray, Buck Shoals, Raffaldini, and Shelton.

Shelton Vineyards has coordinated with a brand new Hampton Inn only 2 miles up the road. The Hampton provides a shuttle bus the vineyard and has a tasting bar in the hotel with an outside patio. A great way to end the day as Shelton also has an excellent restaurant.

My favorite was Raffaldini with Westbend as a close second. Both invite you to bring your lunch, purchase a bottle of wine, and enjoy their outside seating areas. An invite that we will definately take them up on next time.
